Sun 11 May 14:00 - Cup Full time

Old Cryptians finally clinched their first combination cup trophy in 40 years with a comfortable victory over Coney Hill 2nd XV at Kingsholm, writes EJ McGill.

With Coney Hill 3rds winning in the last play of the game in the first of the 3 cup fixtures, their 2nds were looking to take this momentum into their fixture, but it was Cryptians who started the fastest.

An early yellow card for Coney Hill's Number 8 Alex Walters for killing the ball, allowed flanker Tom Barnes to knock over the 3 points from 30 metres and give Cryptians an early lead. Another penalty from Barnes soon followed for a similar offence.

From the resulting kick off, Cryptians number 8 Matt Hurdle saw the space out wide and threw a pass to full back Gareth Flounders. Gareth sliced through the defence and went on a scintillating break. Drawing the man he then offloaded to winger Richard Langbridge who carried on the attack before being brought down by the full back in Coney Hill's 22. Quick ball out from scrum half Rob Trigg and the Cryptians back line did the basics well to take full advantage of the overlap and spread the ball out to Dan Vicary to score under the posts. Barnes added the extras. With less than 10 minutes on the clock, Cryptians were leading 13-0.

A few rallying words from Coney Hill captain Kev Lock gave them a much needed boost, and it wasn’t long until they managed to get themselves on the scoreboard. Strong carries from the front row pairing of John Dix and Sam Hall gave Coney Hill some well-deserved territory and eventually forced a penalty after a Cryptians hand tried to play the ball on the floor. Scrum Half Shane Maguire converted the easy kick to make it 13-3. Just before this passage of play Cryptians lost the influential Mike Simmonds to a nasty looking knee injury which forced an early change with Jack Flounders replacing him.

Coney Hill's poor discipline saw their penalty count increasing rapidly. Any penalty they gave away within 40 metres of the posts, Tom Barnes took full advantage of. A brilliant kick from out on the far left was followed by a straight forward penalty in front of the posts which gave Cryptians a 19-3 lead at half time.

Rich Howells got the second half under way for Cryptians. Both sides knew the next score could be crucial in deciding the outcome of this cup final. But the second half started very slowly and was dominated by the referee's whistle. Basic errors were slowly creeping into the game and neither side looked like producing anything remotely dangerous.

Coney Hill knew they were running out of time and needed to score next to keep alive any chance of winning the game. Fly half Wayne Mulhern kept Cryptians out of their 22 with several great clearance kicks. This led to Coney Hill changing tactics and trying to force a Cryptians error from the high ball. They bombarded Cryptians replacement full back Ash Bawden with several testing kicks, but none of them came to anything.

And it was one of these kicks that eventually led to Cryptians scoring the first points of the half and sealing the game. A brilliant counter attack from Callum Drury managed to win Cryptians an important penalty. They opted to kick to the corner rather than take the points, and it was a gamble that paid off. James King finally managed to throw one in that was straight and the Cryptians pack marched Coney Hill back 10 metres to cross the line. It was Barnes who emerged with the ball in hand and he duly converted his own try to make it 26-3.

Coney Hill did eventually manage to cross the line but it was too little too late. It was hooker Sam Hall who got the try. Some lapse defending from Cryptians combined with the determination of Coney Hill to cross the line, saw Hall crash over the line from the base of the ruck. The conversion was missed.

A game that was played in good spirit throughout was slightly tarnished at the end. A yellow card for both Ryan Stephens and Luke Thompson for fighting with only 5 minutes left to play was followed by a disgraceful and unnecessary late hit on Gareth Flounders that saw the third yellow card for Coney Hill in the game for hooker Sam Hall, and meant they finished with 13 men.

Tom Barnes was named man of the match for his 21 point haul and all-round brilliant performance. It was fitting that Marc Stubbs, still playing at 47, went up to collect the trophy. The last time Cryptians won the cup 40 years ago, his father Joe Stubbs was in the winning team that day.
