Old Cryptians Under 17’s started their 23/24 campaign with an away trip to Bredon Star RFC. 4 lads made their debut for the club today, the boys were feeling confident after previously beating Bredon last season. The game started and debutant Jackson Millard received the kick off and carried into the defence for the first ruck of the game. Despite a strong start and some good defensive play from Valentino Musa Sula, Bredon were knocking at the door and got over the line for the first try of the game, no conversion, 5-0 down. However our heads did not drop as we kept the ball constantly in the opposition’s half, with a notable highlight being Kyrel Brown’s step and twist to break through the defence, before being illegally tripped up. Constant pressure meant that penalties came our way and Tom Loomes slotted two over before half time to make the score 5-6 to the Crypt.
The boys started off the second half strong with high pressure, with a key moment being Reuben Millward and Ryan Godwin’s double hit on the Bredon centre. Unlike the first half, the second was quiet with there being little opportunity for either team to get forward, before Seb Whitelock broke on the wing but unfortunately misplaced his pass (it was 5 metres forward). Some strange decisions from the referee sparked a few minor scraps between the two teams before tensions boiled over right at the final whistle to give Crypt their first win of this season. Full time: 5-6. player of the Match: Jayden Bradshaw for absolutely tearing at line outs on debut, well deserved. Congratulations to those who made their debut for the club and we look forward to our next fixture on the 15th of October away at Swindon College Old Boys.
