The Vets XV will be rolled out twice in April, hosting a German touring side on Friday 13th!

The first game will take place on Friday 13th April at 1900. We will be entertaining the over 35s AND the over 50s from Berliner SV 1892 - use google translate!

They are from the suburb of Wilmersdorf in Berlin and used to play at Bundesliga Level ie German Premiership for many years but they seem to have been knocked off that perch now.

They played against the British, American and French forces (very strong National Service sides) when the city was occupied (1950s to early 1990s when the forces left for good) and were great friends with the RAF in Berlin in particular.

Their rivals in Berlin apart from the forces were: Berlin Rugby Club another Premiership side in their day and Siemenstadt Rugby based on a massive factory in a suburb of Berlin that was named after Siemens who set up their production there after the war. BSV 1892 is a multi-discipline Sports Verein (Club) who take their rugby seriously. But as the Germans say: 'Arbeit ist Arbeit und Schnapps ist Schnapps'. Roughly translated to 'work hard and play hard'.

Useful German phrases to learn for the evening:

  • "Zwei (or any other number) bier bitte und mein Freund bezahlt" = "Two beers please and my friend is paying"
  • "Prost" = "Cheers"
  • "Gut gespielt" = "Well played"
  • "Was trinken sie?" = "What are you drinking?" (dangerous and not recommended)
  • "Danke" of course is "Thank you", which usually goes with the reply "Bitte" which means please or in this context "Don't mention it"!

If you want to play in the Over 35s, let Dunc know. The Over 50s will be more of a Combination side - details of organiser to follow ASAP!

Let's make the evening a big one for the club, come down, be entertained and show our visitors a good time!! What is the German for "boat race" I wonder...
